Plane wave diffraction by a submarine
The acoustic model mesh of the submarine
Due to the large dimension of the system (about 40 meters long) and the quite high frequency of the incoming plane wave, the mesh to perform such kind of analysis have to be very fine (more than 50,000 nodes on the Figure on right).
This example illustrates the use of Fast Multipole Method algorithm to perform large acoustic radiation/diffraction problem with BEM.
With direct BEM technique, this problem is unsolvable on a classical computer. With FMM, the problem is not only solvable but can be performed with a very competitive CPU time.
